Creating our own myths

After listening to, and working with, 5 Muiscas' Myths, students created their own myth. Some of them included themselves in the story, and some changed the original story into a current one (preserving the original characters).
They introduced the characters in a specific order, and then organized them in a time line, which shows their order of appearance.

Después de escuchar 5 mitos sobre los Muiscas y de hacer diferentes trabajos respecto a los mismos, los estudiantes crearon sus propios mitos. Algunos se incluyeron en la historia que contaron y algunos cambiaron la historia original, poniéndola en un contexto actual (conservando los personajes).

Ellos introdujeron los personajes a la historia en un orden especifico, y luego organizaron estos personajes en una línea de tiempo, de acuerdo a su orden de aparición en la historia.

What about the adults in the school?

The students asked teachers and other adults in the school, about their knowledge related to Myths (from the Muisca culture). After the students finished with the questions, they made graphs -using bars- to show their results, and then analyzed them (finding the most known myth, and the most unknown myth).

Y, ¿qué hay de los adultos del colegio?

Los estudiantes le preguntaron a profesores y otros adultos del colegio sobre sus conocimientos respecto a mitos (de la cultura Muisca). Luego de que terminaron de hacer estas encuentas, ellos graficaron los resultados para mostrarlos y analizaron estas gráficas (encontrando los mitos más y menos conocidos).

Nuestra versión de algunas leyendas

En clase de español, los niños hacen la exposición de dos de las leyendas que estudiaron: "El hombre caimán" del Plato Magdalena y del Amazonas "Yrapuru". Previo a esta exposición, cada grupo hizo un pequeño libro de su leyenda, en el que volvian a contar a sus compañeros lo que sucedió. Este es el resultado de las presentaciones.

¿Qué son tradiciones, mitos y leyendas? - What are traditions, myths and legends?

Después de haber tenido algunas charlas sobre lo que son mitos y leyendas, sus diferencias y similitudes y su relación con las tradiciones Colombianas, los niños hicieron unos afiches en grupo en los que mostraron lo que ellos entendían por estos tres conceptos: mitos, leyendas y tradiciones.

After talking about the differences and similarities between myths and legends, and their relation with the Colombian Traditions, the students made posters to show what they understand about these three concepts: myths, legends and traditions.

Los niños de transición hicieron un escrito en el que definían las palabras mitos y leyendas, contrastándolas una frente a la otra y escribiendo las características de cada una.

The students wrote some ideas they had, at the beginning of the Project, about myths and legends, placing one in front of the other, writing common characteristics and differences they thought those had.

Primer Dibujo - First Drawing

Los dibujos, hechos por los niños, muestran sus ideas respecto a las tradiciones: mitos, leyendas y celebraciones. Estos dibujos fueron hechos para mostrar sus conocimientos previos, al iniciar el proyecto.

En los dibujos podemos ver que la mayoría de ellos tiene como punto de referencia para celebraciones su cumpleaños. Así como encontramos que los conceptos de mitos y leyendas no están muy claros.

The drawings, made by the students, show their ideas regarding the Colombian Traditions: Myths, Legends and Celebrations. These drawings were made by them to show their knowledge, prior to the beginning of the project.

In these drawings, we can see how their birthday party is the most common reference for the celebrations. We can also see that the concepts of myths and legends are not very clear for them.

What new things do we want to learn?

Most children in our classroom had one big question: What is a legend, and what is the difference between legend and myth? They know there are myths and legends like "El Dorado" and "Chía", because of their research, and because they have seen the movie "A Road to El Dorado" (which is not very loyal to the true story). But, they don't know what the WORDS "legend" and "myth" meant.

And on celebrations, well, they have heard of many Colombian carnivals, and they would like to know why and where these carnivals happen.

Chía, ¿un pueblo, una planta o un mito?

Como actividad iniciadora los niños hicieron con la ayuda de sus papás una investigación sobre el significado de la palabra Chía.

Luego de esta investigación, los niños presentaron sus trabajos ante sus compañeros.

La palabra Chía actualmente, en Colombia, se refiere a un pueblo situado en las afueras de Bogotá. Sin embargo, los niños encontraron información sobre esta palabra que los llevó a darse cuenta de que esta palabra también estaba relacionada con un mito Chibcha (o Muisca).

A partir de esto, hemos empezado a investigar y aprender sobre los mitos Colombianos.
